Nate Herman will be in the Pittsburgh area for a weekend to hold day-long seminars in the art of comedy writing offering techniques, exercises and training tips on how to make your sketches, scenes, stand-up routines and blogs better, tighter and funnier.
ONE FULL DAY: 10am to 5pm. Only 16 students per class. Only TWO classes available, one saturday & one sunday.The day consists of 3 consecutive group sessions, each 2 1/2 hours, with a lunch break (bring your own). Each session builds on the others.
Topics covered include Joke Form: the Building Block; The Extended Solo Piece/Blog; The Interview; Tapping Into Everyday Dialogue; Two Person Scene; Three Person Scene; Four Person Scene; The Story; Beginnings, Middles & Ends; Creating an Effective Running Order; Learning to Spot and Correct Common Mistakes.
Bring your laptop or notebooks and pens. There is no need to being in any existing pieces of yours; there will be much in-class writing and critiquing.
You will get the chance to meet and work with fellow writers; to have your work heard and to hear their work. Enough material will be generated during the day to allow you all to continue, if you choose, to meet, evaluate and assemble your own Sketch Revue.

Nate Herman has been writing, performing and directing comedy professionally since 1967, starting at The Second City (cast member and Jeff Award winning director) and going on to National Lampoon’s Lemmings (at the Village Gate in New York and on the road), The National Lampoon Radio Show (writer and performer), National Public Radio (weekly topical comedy pieces on All Things Considered with Warren Leming), and Saturday Night Live (staff writer: four seasons; Emmy nominated writing staff). His band, Wilderness Road, recorded for both Columbia and Warner/Reprise records. Nate is currently Director of Films For The Ear,which produces staged readings of such classic movies as Dr. Strangelove and His Girl Friday. He has headed the iO Comedy Writing Program since 2008.
