Haters for Hire Podcast: DAVID FEDOR from Hustlebot & Improv Jam

Onomatopoeia, throwing the commitment chair, and an old timey tale of the pittsburgh improv scene with actor, improvisor, and host of the ‘Pittsburgh Improv Jam‘ David Fedor. This episode was recorded at Derek Minto’s Whiskey Den on the historic Southside of Pittsburgh on June 19th, 2012.

Haters for Hire is a weekly audio podcast chock full of swearing, stand up comics, and game show style violence all hosted by Derek Minto. Each week features new guests, stories and discussions. A majority of the time the guests are comics from the city of Pittsburgh though many hail from all over country.

Laughter Heals, Reduces Stress and Increases Productivity BY David Michael

Wellness Speaker...David Michael

For years now research has shown that laughter has incredible  effects on the human immune system. Among many health institutions  both Johns Hopkins and the Mayo clinic have done studies that have revealed the healing effects of  laughter that include reduced stress ,increased productivity and creativity as well as increased memory and learning. Really its no joke! Being a comedian I have never under estimated these effects on a audience. Over the years after shows some members of the audience are so moved that they want to share their feelings and personal stories with the comedian or comedians who performed. I can recount many stories from audience members who just want to say "thank you" or  "I needed that" and then they would go on to tell me some of the most inspiring stories about loss, tragedy ,incredible stress and everyday human troubles that we all at some point have to deal with. As a comedian I have been hugged, kissed, squeezed, given drinks, dinner, invited to homes, marriage proposals and in some cases a shoulder to cry on. From my experience I can actually see the powerful effects of laughter  up close.
In today's corporate world, the stress seems to be over whelming  with downsizing, layoffs, mergers, and a shrinking work force. Employees seem to be facing an uphill battle for wellness and sanity. I honestly believe more and more companies are in need of some enlightenment. For most of my corporate career as a comedian I have been mostly used as entertainer and speaker and  as an emcee for larger events . In the last ten years a slow change has taken place. More and more of my clients have been inquiring about the possibility of using me as a wellness tool. Considering how powerful laughter is ... its something that has grown and taken on a life of its own. When I speak about my new book  I always point out that when you use humor in your presentation the audience will have a higher tendency to retain your message. But when I am featured as a wellness speaker the only objective I have  is for everybody to laugh and have a good time. What's that! You mean your going to have a presentation for your employees in the middle of the work day and all they have to do is laugh and  have a good time ! The anticipation of getting a break in the middle of the work day is sweet enough but when you add the fact that there will be nothing to learn or remember ...well now you've got something my friend. Can you imagine your employees all laughing  at the same time or leaving a meeting all with a smile on their face !  And if that's not appealing enough think of the stress relief and increased productivity your company as well as the bonding between management and employees that will benefit from this wellness activity. So with all the sharing that is done with all of social media in business today why don't we share something that is as old as the hills and has the natural  healing effects of a modern day fountain of youth! .  If this trend continues to grow the jokes of the future might start something like this....a CEO,a manager and an employee all walk into a meeting...an hour later they walk out laughing ....together.

David's new book features a professional comedian's inside techniques for effective public speaking. The techniques David reveals are so powerful that comedy purists believe it's cheating! Along with translating his experience for use in public and corporate speaking, David shares his experiences and advice he's received from the likes of Jay Leno, Drew Carey, Dennis Miller, Howie Mandel and more.

Local Improv Troupe Invades Del Close Marathon BY Chelsea Cummins

In every profession, there is an event that signifies achievement. Actors want Oscars and musicians crave Grammys. For improv troupes, it’s being selected for the Del Close Marathon in New York City. Each year, thousands of groups enter for a chance to perform, but only 200 are chosen. Taking place June 29 to July 2, the marathon will host four groups from Pittsburgh and they have a common denominator—they’re all from the Steel City Improv Theater.

Opened in January 2011, SCIT hosts improv shows and classes throughout the week. Located at 808 Tripoli Street on the Northside, SCIT is led by dedicated instructors who studied at the same comedy school as Will Ferrell and Tina Fey

Founders Kasey Daley and Justin Zell cultivated their improv skill while living in New York City. A Pittsburgh native, Daley studied at the Magnet Theater, People’s Improv Theater and the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater. Her husband, Zell, learned, taught, and performed at the People’s Improv Theater. Originally from New York, his additional studies include the Upright Citizens Brigade and The Second City.

During the three day event, there will be more than 390 shows on seven different stages. Groups will gather from Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago, and London, among others. Created in honor of improv legend Del Close, the Upright Citizens Brigade began the marathon to remember their mentor in an event that houses some of the best comedy talent from around the world. Close is known for developing long-form improvisation into what it is today, as well as training comedy legends such as John Belushi, John Candy, and Bill Murray.

The LuPones, a musical improv group from SCIT, will perform Friday at the Upright Citizens Brigade east theater in the Lower East End in a coveted 9:30 p.m. slot. The next day, the all-female group Blue Stocking Babes, will take the stage at the Hudson Guild Theater at noon. Next, The Union, composed of SCIT instructors, will go on at 1:30 p.m. at the same theater. The final group, AKA, will perform at UCBeast Saturday at 5:30 p.m.

Best of the Burgh 2012 - Pittsburgh Magazine - COMEDY WINS!

Best Addition to Pittsburgh’s Comedy Universe:
Steel City Improv Theater

Baltimore, Philly, Washington, Boston, New York, Chicago, even Buffalo — plenty of neighboring cities have well-established homes for improv comedy. And until early 2011, Pittsburgh could not join them on that list; while we had talented performers, there wasn’t a go-to space hosting off-the-cuff hilarity. Fortunately, Steel City Improv Theater (SCIT) showed up to expand our horizons. In an intimate, tucked-away North Side space, SCIT presents between one and three shows every Friday and Saturday night, along with budget funny in the form of its weekly Totally Free Mondays showcase. SCIT also offers classes for improvisers-to-be. If you’ve only ever seen improv at Chicago’s Second City — or if you’ve never seen live improv before ... period — head to the North Side, where the group is ready to introduce you to some homegrown talent. — S.C.

Amazing job - Kasey Daley & Justin Zell for making Improv MAINSTREAM in the 'Burgh!

Best ’Burgh-Born Viral Sensation:
“Pittsburgh Dad”

We’ve been blindsided by the whole thing,” says Chris Preksta, co-creator of “Pittsburgh Dad,” about the online sitcom’s meteoric popularity. Preksta and Curt Wootton, who stars as the Dad himself, write the script for each show and post new episodes on their YouTube channel Tuesday mornings. Each short episode truly is classic Pittsburgh; the Stillers, Klondikes — and even Sally Wiggin — receive mentions. Fans from all over the world, including those in Japan, Brazil, England and “every corner of the globe” (as Preksta says), are watching in droves — causing the duo to rack up more than five million views since October 2011. Preksta says their favorite comments come from troops stationed all over the world, who love getting a weekly taste of their beloved hometown. — J.W.

MESSAGE in the MADNESS: One Man Show with RON PLACONE; premiering JUNE 23, 2012

COMEDIAN’S ONE-MAN SHOW BRINGS
INSIGHT, HUMOR TO MEDIA AND POLITICS

“How is a profit-driven mass media affecting democracy--and what can we do about it?”
Madness in the Message, a provocative multimedia performance of media criticism and comedy
featuring local rising comedian Ron Placone, will be running once a month from June through
September 2012 at the Steel City Improv Theater on Pittsburgh’s Northside.
Describing the show “as The Daily Show meets the BBC series How TV Ruined Your Life with an academic
edge,” Ron promises a tour through a contemporary media landscape where advertisers, owners and
special interest groups come first and the general public comes dead last.
Madness in the Message: Start Talking describes the fractured relationship between commercial
media and democracy the only way you can while staying sane—through humor. Ron’s performance
piece includes case studies, video footage, interviews, sketches and a call-to-action that will resonate
regardless of whether you’re ready to Occupy Mellon Square or throw a Tea Party in the Mon.
After its 4-month run, Ron hopes to take his show to campuses and organizations nationally and
internationally.
Ron Placone is a nationally-touring comedian, academic and writer. He recently finished his master’s
degree in Rhetoric & Philosophy at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA. Ron’s podcast, Thoughts,
Rants & Cold Coffee is currently in rotation on New Dissident Radio in Los Angeles, WCDB in Albany,
NY, and OSS Radio Network in Lansing, MI. His writing appears regularly in the Huffington Post Union
of Bloggers and Pardon the Pundit. His academic writing has appeared in the Journal of Contemporary
Rhetoric.
Madness in the Message will run 8pm on Saturday June 23, Saturday July 21, Saturday August 25 and
Saturday September 22. All shows will be held at the Steel City Improv Theater
