The fervor over the killing of African-American teenager Trayvon Martin has dominated the airwaves over the last few days. George Zimmerman, the man who killed Martin, was released by local police in Florida under the state's "stand your ground" law. In other words, Zimmerman is claiming self defense despite the fact that Martin was unarmed. Zimmerman deserves his day in court, but after listening to the 911 call and knowing Zimmerman's history of reporting black males to the police, I have my doubts about self defense.

Shell Oil is building a new petrochemical plant in western Pennsylvania. Everyone is excited about the jobs and related businesses that this will bring to the area but I am more worried about what toxins it might bring. We are not even sure what kind of environmental impact all of this Marcellus shale gas drilling will have. Now we'll have a "cracker" plant to worry about too.
